Finding Out About Symmetry

Your students will love working through this self-guided 20-slide activity which requires them to determine whether a shape has a line of symmetry (or maybe more!) before progressing to the next step!

The curriculum-aligned outcome of this activity is to recognise a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts, in order to identify line-symmetric figures.

How to Play:

Students are to look at the two shapes and click on the shape with the correct line of symmetry. If the student chooses incorrectly they will need to click the “back” button to try again. If they choose correctly they need to click on the “next” button to move to the next question.

The student then continues to complete the tasks (which increase in difficulty, with more complex shapes and those with more than one line of symmetry near the end of the activity) before reaching a congratulatory slide to denote they’ve completed the entire task!

In-Class Differentiation Tips for this Interactive Activity

How to Differentiate This Resource for Students Who Need a Challenge:

Have the students draw on the board or point out additional lines of symmetry for the shapes; allow the students to explain why one option is incorrect and why the other option is correct

How to Assist Those Who Need Extra Support:

Allow the student to be read the directions; allow the student to work with a peer; allow the student to only work on slides with shapes that have one line of symmetry.
