How Do You Find the Volume of a Rectangular Prism?
When students first learn about volume, they usually learn how to stack unit cubes to see how many it takes to fill up a figure. This visual concept helps students understand that 3-dimensional objects are comprised of length, width and height. Once students grasp the idea of stacking and counting unit cubes, they can move on to using the formula for volume.
To find the volume of a rectangular prism, you need to multiply its length, width and height. The formula for finding the volume of a rectangular prism is:
Volume = Length × Width × Height
For example, if you have a rectangular prism with a length of 6 units, a width of 4 units and a height of 5 units, you would calculate the volume as follows:
Volume = 6 units × 4 units × 5 units
The volume of the rectangular prism is 120 cubic units.
