Conducting an ORF Assessment
- Choose a fluency reading passage that the student can read independently with 95%-100% accuracy.
- Give the student a copy of the unnumbered reading passage. Set a timer and have them read aloud for one minute.
- During reading, use the teacher’s copy of the passage to note any errors made by the student. Only mark errors that are not self-corrected within three seconds.
- Calculate a student’s average reading rate by subtracting errors from the number of correct words read in one minute.
- If the selected text is too easy or challenging for the student, repeat the assessment with a more appropriate passage.
