Fraction Model Matching
How well can your students represent fractions in different ways? Do the know how to represent the same fraction with a visual model and a number line? If your students are in need of additional practise, you have come to the right place! Teach Starter has created a ready-to-go match-up activity that will help your students sharpen their understanding of fraction models.
Prior to student use, all 36 cards should be cut apart. Provide a student recording sheet to each student or group. Students will work to make 9 matching sets of 4 cards with equivalent amounts shown. They can record matches on the provided recording sheet. Work can be checked using the provided key.
This resource is intended as an engaging task to practice matching fractions to their word form, shaded model and number line model.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:
🆘 Support Struggling Students
Provide number lines that are partitioned and labelled as needed to assist students. Consider laminating the cards or placing them in page protectors so students can mark on the number lines with dry erase to count the number of partitioned sections.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
As an extension, challenge students to make their own matching sets of 4 using fractions not in the set already. Students can fold a sheet of paper into four sections and create their matching set. Alternatively, ask students to create a four square where 3 fractions match and 1 does not belong. Then, students can trade with partners, determine the one that does not match the others, and explain how they know.
🏃 Relay Race
Divide students into two team lines and show a flashcard to the students at the front of each line. The student that can identify the fraction or draw a corresponding fraction model wins the flashcard. The team with the most flashcards at the end of the game wins!

Print on thick card for added durability and longevity. Place all pieces in a folder or large envelope for easy access.
Sustainability Tip: Print a few recording sheets on thick card and slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse them.
