Encourage positive relationships by using our friendship writing prompts in your classroom.
Get Your Students Writing About Friendship
Friendship plays an important role in children’s development and well-being. Teachers can support children’s friendships by providing opportunities for socialization and encouraging positive interactions with peers.
If you are looking for activities to use to help foster friendship within the classroom, you have come to the right place! Teach Starter has developed a set of 5 writing prompts you can use in your classroom. There are two versions, one set with primary writing lines and one with intermediate writing lines.
The prompts included in this download are:
- I am a good friend when…
- Three ways I can be a good friend…
- I show I care when…
- These are my friends… We like to…
- All About My Friend
Students are to read each writing prompt and draw and write their own responses. The ‘About My Friend’ worksheet asks students to write a response for each topic about one friend they choose. They will also need to draw a portrait of their friend or a drawing of both them and their friend. A picture can also be glued in the drawing area instead.
The purpose of this resource is to give students an opportunity to draw and write a response for a variety of friendship-related prompts.
Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding
A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your social emotional learning lessons.
In addition to individual student work time, use these writing prompts to enhance learning through small groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.
If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:
🆘 Support Struggling Students
For those students who may find this challenging, have them sit in a small group and brainstorm together. Write additional vocabulary terms on the board for them to utilize and encourage them to think of their personal writing goals so they know what they need to work towards.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
If you have students that have finished a writing prompt earlier than others, have them proofread their work and encourage them to expand 1-2 sentences to make them more interesting, or encourage them to use some new vocabulary.
