A Remembrance Day Poem – For the Fallen

“For the Fallen,”is a poem by Laurence Binyon, written in 1914 at the beginning of World War I. This poem is considered one of the most iconic and enduring war poems in literature. It is often read and analysed during Remembrance Day ceremonies and other events commemorating the sacrifices of soldiers in times of war.

Reading a poem at a commemorative service can help your students to understand the military service experience. You can recite the Ode and other poetry on Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and other important days. One of the most famous poems used on Remembrance Day is known as the Ode of Remembrance.  The Ode is actually the fourth stanza in Binyon’s poem, ‘For the Fallen’.

“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the moring

We will remember them.”
