Use this hands-on activity with your students and help them make equal groups to represent multiplication problems.
Teaching Your Students How to Multiply?
As students extend their understanding beyond addition and subtraction and move into multiplication, chances are you will need a few different strategies up your sleeve. Teaching students different strategies can help them conceptualise how multiplication works in different ways. Traditional strategies may include:
- Using arrays
- Using equal groups
- Skip counting
- Using a number line
Teach Starter has created a hands-on activity for your students to use when learning how to use equal groups to determine the product of a multiplication problem.
Practise Using Equal Groups to Multiply!
Give your students a hands-on activity to use when learning how to create equal groups and relate them to multiplication. This teacher-created download comes with an instructions page, a recording sheet and two spinners to use during the activity.
Directions for play:
- Students will dedicate one spinner for the number of groups and the other for the number of items.
- Player 1 spins both spinners, fills in the information in column 1 on the ‘Equal Groups Recording Sheet,’ and passes the recording sheet to Player 2.
- Using the manipulatives, Player 2 creates the equal groups shown on the recording sheet.
- Player 1 checks that it is correct and uses it to complete the other 2 columns on the recording sheet.
- Students swap roles and complete the next row on the recording sheet.
- Play continues until all of the rows are complete on the recording sheet.
