Learning How to Round Decimals Isn’t That Scary!

As the seasons change and the leaves transform, it’s time to sprinkle a little magic into your maths classes. Halloween season is upon us, and there’s no better way to spark your students’ interest than with spine-tingling, ghostly, and delightfully spooky maths activities!

Understanding rounding, especially when it comes to decimals, can be quite a challenge for students. Determining which number a value is closest to and deciding whether to round up or down can be challenging. It’s not uncommon for students to feel bewildered and frustrated as they struggle with this mathematical concept. However, here at Teach Starter, we see these struggles and are dedicated to providing resources to make rounding decimals easier and much more fun.

Digital Decimal Rounding Activities with a Spooky Flair!

This Halloween season, get ready to add a touch of spooky excitement to your decimal rounding lessons with our Google Slides resource! This digital interactive activity is the perfect addition to your lesson plans as it can be used in various ways. Here are a few ideas!

  • Direct Instruction – Project the slide deck on your screen and work through the questions together, modelling the different steps in the rounding process. Ensure you’re working in EDIT mode and not presentation mode, or else you won’t be able to move things around.
  • Independent Practise – Once you’ve taught your not-so-scary maths lesson, set your students to work on an independent practise assignment by assigning the slide deck to Google Classroom. From there, they will work in edit mode to click, drag, and type their answers in the document itself, turning it in for easy grading when finished.
  • Formative or Summative Assessment – Use the slide deck as a formative or summative assessment to check for understanding. Its short, to-the-point, and practical questioning sequence makes it the perfect quick-check activity.

Through this activity, students will sort, write, match, and select the correct answers to demonstrate their understanding of how to round numbers to the tenths, hundredths, and thousandths place.
