Explore Hard vs. Soft Objects with Printable Matter Activity Sheets

Help your early-year’s students build their vocabulary and observation skills with these fun and engaging Describing Matter Activity Sheets! Designed especially for young learners, this resource focuses on teaching students how to describe everyday objects based on their physical properties, specifically whether they are soft or hard.

With three hands-on worksheets, your students will explore examples of matter, practise descriptive language, and develop a deeper awareness of the world around them.

Is It Hard or Soft? Describing Matter Worksheets

These printable matter activity sheets are perfect for early learners. We have included the following three matter activity sheets in this download.

  • Hard or Soft? Worksheet—Students will decide if each object shown is hard or soft and check the box. They will then count their checkmarks for each to determine the total number of objects that are hard and soft
  • Hard and Soft Classroom Exploration Worksheet – Students will locate and choose 8 objects from around the classroom. Then, they will identify if each object is hard or soft and draw or write the objects in the correct columns
  • Hard and Soft Search and Graph Worksheet – Students will find 8 objects from around the classroom. They will use tally marks to record whether each object is hard in the table and create a bar graph to display the results.

These activity sheets are designed to support various teaching styles and can be used for:

  • Whole-class lessons about matter and its properties.
  • Small group or independent practise.
  • At-home enrichment for building science skills and language skills.
