The Lotus Flower + Harmony Day

The lotus flower holds significant symbolic meaning in various cultures, including those that celebrate Harmony Day. Its symbolism often aligns with themes of purity, enlightenment, resilience, and unity. Here’s how the lotus flower can be interpreted in the context of Harmony Day:

  • Purity: The lotus flower is known for its ability to emerge from murky waters and blossom into a pristine and beautiful flower. In the context of Harmony Day, this purity symbolizes the potential for unity and harmony to emerge even in challenging or diverse environments.
  • Enlightenment: In many Eastern cultures, the lotus is associated with spiritual enlightenment. Harmony Day emphasizes the importance of understanding and appreciating diverse perspectives, fostering an enlightened and open-minded community.
  • Resilience: The lotus flower’s ability to thrive in less-than-ideal conditions speaks to its resilience. Similarly, Harmony Day encourages resilience in the face of cultural differences, promoting a spirit of acceptance and understanding.
  • Unity in Diversity: The lotus often has different colored petals, representing the diversity of life. On Harmony Day, this symbolism aligns with the celebration of cultural diversity and the idea that, like the lotus, we can coexist harmoniously despite our differences.
  • Cultural Significance: In some cultures, the lotus holds specific religious or cultural significance. Referencing the lotus on Harmony Day can be a way to acknowledge and celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds within a community.
  • Interconnectedness: The roots of the lotus are firmly grounded in the mud, while the flower rises above the water’s surface. This duality symbolizes the interconnectedness of all people, irrespective of their backgrounds, emphasizing the idea that we are all part of a larger, harmonious whole.

How to Make this Lotus Flower Craft

Print the lotus petals of the template on orange card and the lotus pad pages on green.

  1. After a class discussion on cultural diversity, provide each student with a Lotus Flower Petal.
  2. Inform the students that they will decorate the flowers with words associated with Harmony Day and diversity.
  3. Allow the students to decorate their lotus flower petals, writing a few words on the unshaded section.
  4. Once the students have finished, encourage them to share the words they have written with the class.
  5. Have students find others with different petal pieces that can be combined to create the lotus flower.
  6. Once a group of students has combined their petals correctly, provide them with a lotus pad where they can write a new word.
  7. Stick the lotus pad and petals onto card or add them to a Harmony Day display.
