The Heat is On! Where Does Heat Come From?
Display this educational poster in your classroom when studying heat energy with your students. The poster clearly explains the three primary sources of heat with examples.
- Sun – The sun is 5,726 degrees hot and gives off enough light and heat to support life on Earth.
- Kinetic Energy – The friction created when two surfaces rub against each other produces heat energy. Some examples include rubbing your hands together, sliding down a slippery dip or jumping on the spot.
- Electrical Energy – Electrical appliances can convert electrical energy into heat energy. Some examples include hair dryers, light bulbs, and stovetop elements.
- Chemical Energy – Heat energy can be produced as a result of a chemical reaction. Some examples include burning wood, digesting food, and mixing chemical substances.
Heat Energy – Thermal Energy
Teaching kids about heat sources is an opportunity to introduce fundamental scientific concepts like temperature, conduction, convection, and radiation can pique their curiosity and interest in science. Once you’ve introduced the students to the different heat sources – you might like to get them to identify various heat sources and where they’re sourced from using our Heat Sources Sorting Activity.
