Compare and contrast pairs of objects and encourage students to respond to questions featured on this set of task cards.
Is it Heavy? Is it Light? Task Cards for Kids
This set of vibrant task cards are a great addition to your maths lessons when comparing and contrasting the mass of everyday objects. Each task card shows two different objects such as: a race car or a traffic control cone, a toothbrush or a hair drying along with a simple question, either:
- Which is lighter?
- Which is heavier?
Students are then prompted to answer these questions on an answer sheet. Having students work in pairs or small groups and explaining why they think an object is heavier or lighter than another is a fantastic way to increase your students’ awareness of the mass of objects and the terms – heavier and lighter.
How to Use these Heavy vs. Light Task Cards in the Classroom
Task cards are a fantastic resource to use in your classroom due to the flexible nature of this type of resource. They can be used as they were intended, or, they can be used for a range of other different activities based on the requirements of your class.
Here are some other suggested ways to use this set of task cards in the classroom:
- Display a task card on the white board and have your students stand up and move to the left or right for each object. For example, if there is a task card showing an anchor and a pair of thongs with the question of “Which is lighter” students that think the anchor is lighter go to the right hand side and those that think the pair of thongs is lighter go to the left.
- Show the class one task card and get them to write the answer on show me boards.
- Display the task cards around the classroom and in pairs have students walk around with their recording sheet and complete the answer.
