Explore items and decide which is heaviest and lightest in this fun and engaging roll and colour activity.
Explore and Colour Your Heavy and Light Finds
This set of two activity sheets has been created by a teacher to help students explore the terms heavy vs light in a fun and engaging way. Students are encouraged to work in pairs to roll a dice and then find a box on the sheet, they then need to look at the 2 objects and decide which one is heavier (or lighter), colour the picture and then continue until all the boxes have a shaded object.
Students will be picking between some of the following items:
- Kite or pumpkin
- Torch or spade
- Pineapple or ice block
- Buttons or sewing machine
- Turtle or camel
To engage with the students further you can get them to explain their reasons for their choices.
More Heavy vs Light Activities for the Classroom
Are you looking for more activities to include in your measurement of mass activities in the classroom that explore the terms heavy and light? Here are some suggestions from one of our resident teachers:
- Object sort – provide students with a collection of objects and have them sort these objects into heavy and light groups.
- Go on a classroom scavenger hunt – similar to the above activity but have students work in pairs and walk around the classroom to find objects that fit the heavy category and another group of objects for the light category.
- Balance scales – set up a measurement station with balance scales and have students weigh pairs of objects, predicting which is heavier before testing.
- What’s in the bag? Place an item in a bag you can’t see through and have students pick up the bag and guess if the item is heavy or light based on how it feels. After they guess, reveal the object and discuss.
