Use this “How to Brush Your Teeth” procedural writing activity to help familiarise your students with the structural elements of procedure texts.

How to Brush Your Teeth Procedural Writing Task

Young students require a lot of scaffolding when learning to write a new text type.

This flipbook has been created by our expert teacher team to guide your students in writing a procedural text to inform others how to brush their teeth. Each page contains a particular structural feature on procedural texts for the students to fill in. These are:

  • Page 1 – Materials
  • Page 2 – Step 1: Toothpaste
  • Page 3 – Step 2: Brush
  • Page 4 – Step 3: Rinse Brush
  • Page 5 – Step 4: Rinse Mouth

The keywords featured on each page (toothpaste, brush, rinse brush, rinse mouth) serve as a scaffold to support students in writing the steps of the “How to Brush Your Teeth” procedure. Space is also provided for the students to draw a visual representation of each step.

Through completing this activity, students will not only learn the key structural elements of a procedural text, but will also learn how to clean their teeth correctly!

Use This “How to Brush Your Teeth” Flipbook for Homework 

Younger learners often benefit from the physical action of completing a procedure, as it can help clarify the process.

Why not send this “How to Brush Your Teeth” procedural writing task home with your students as a homework assignment? Students could actually clean their teeth, then complete the flipbook by writing and drawing the steps they followed.

When they bring their flipbooks back to school, students could compare their “How to Brush Your Teeth” procedures with a partner to see how similar they are.
