A Sunflower Craft Template for Procedural Writing

Did you know that craft activities are an engaging and effective way of teaching procedural writing to young students? This is because they provide a multi-sensory experience, allowing students to connect the physical act of crafting with the mental process of writing.

This “How to Grow a Sunflower” craft template resource combines a practical, hands-on craft activity with a scaffolded procedural writing task. Students will enjoy the hands-on experience of cutting and pasting pieces together to create a sunflower in a pot. Afterwards, they’ll get to put their writing skills to the test by composing a procedure text that explains the steps they followed to make their sunflower craft.

The resource download includes everything you’ll need to complete this “How to Grow a Sunflower” activity with your class of eager learners:

  1. Title page containing a visual representation of the craftivity
  2. Teacher instructions
  3. 5 x differentiated writing templates
  4. Sunflower craftivity cut-outs

Comprehensive instructions explaining how you might like to use this resource in your classroom are included to help you make the most of this procedural writing activity.

Integrate this procedural writing craftivity into your science lessons on the parts of a plant. When students are creating their sunflower craft, have them identify different parts of the plant, such as the stem, the leaves and the petals.
