This student-led mini-book has been created by a teacher to help students understand the elements of a good summarisation of a nonfiction text. This mini-book guides students on a journey of learning about extracting key information in nonfiction texts. Included in this mini-book ar the following pages:

  • Definition of summarising/summary.
  • Activity for students to think about a time they had to summarise new information they learnt.
  • Understanding what a nonfiction summary should and should not include.
  • A nonfiction summary checklist.
  • Some information about what good readers do.
  • What students should do when summarising a nonfiction text they are reading.
  • Some activities to practise summarising.

How to Use this Mini-Book in the Classroom

This mini-book can be seamlessly integrated into your classroom to enhance comprehension and critical thinking. Here are some suggested ways to do this in the classroom:

  • Spend time unpacking the content on each of the definition pages.
  • Complete the activities in small groups or as a whole class on the whiteboard (depending on the level of your students).
  • Use the mini-book as a lesson plan guide an focus on one to two pages a day.
  • Send home as a homework task to solidify your students understanding.
