Retelling the Humpty Dumpty Rhyme

Have you ever been in the middle of reading something and realised you had no idea what it was about? Good reading comprehension requires rewording and storing pictures in our memory as we read. We help children to learn this skill by having them retell stories. Story retelling helps early readers by:

  • developing memory skills.
  • developing sequencing skills
  • increasing comprehension and understanding of text.

These retell sequencing cards have been designed to do exactly this! Students will read and sequence the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme using the various cards provided. The resource includes:

  • one complete, poster-sized copy of the rhyme
  • two versions of the rhyme broken up into phrases
  • one version of the rhyme represented by images.

Multiple Applications for This Nursery Rhymes Activity

One size never fits all when it comes to teaching little ones! Here are some suggestions for using this resource in your classroom:

Whole-class instruction

Read the rhyme together as a class. Sitting together on the carpet, choose students one at a time to sequence the words and the pictures to recreate the rhyme.

Targeted group support

Have a small group of students who require some targeted work on sequencing? These cards are perfect for use in your guided literacy groups. Adult support is recommended.

Independent extension

Have some high-flying students who are ready to work independently? Provide them with the resource and let them conquer the challenge of recreating the text on their own!
