Teaching Tips for Indefinite Pronouns and Subject Verb Agreement

Subject-verb agreement can be one of the trickier grammatical concepts to teach, especially if you’re teaching it for the first time!

Here are three top tips to remember when teaching indefinite pronouns and subject-verb agreement to your class:

  1. Break down the rules. One of the trickier aspects of working with indefinite pronouns and subject-verb agreement is the fact that some indefinite pronouns are always singular, while others can be plural. Make sure students understand which is which by providing plenty of examples.
  2. Keep examples simple. When teaching these rules in the context of real sentences, keep the examples simple and age-appropriate. Use sentences that students might actually use, for example, “Everyone enjoys a brain break” or “ Some of the maths problems are hard.”
  3. Provide plenty of varied practice. Give students multiple and varied opportunities to practise indefinite pronoun subject-verb agreement through worksheets, games, sorting activities or digital exercises. This allows students to apply their learning and reinforce their understanding in different ways.
