Explore Information Report Paragraph Structure

When writing an information report, it is essential the students understand how to write a well-structured paragraph in which the ideas unfold in a logical sequence.

This hands-on sorting activity has been designed by our teacher team to enhance your students’ sequencing skills when it comes to informative paragraphs. The resource features six different paragraphs split into five sentences each. Students are tasked with reading the sentences and rearranging them into their correct sequence to form a coherent paragraph. Additionally, a complete version of each paragraph is provided for reference, ensuring students have the support they need to succeed.

The paragraphs are based on the following topics:

  • The Paralympic Games
  • Zebras
  • Sharks
  • Roald Dahl
  • Earthquakes
  • Margherita Pizzas

Designed to boost reading comprehension, critical thinking and sequencing abilities, this activity makes a great addition to your informative writing unit!

Multiple Uses for This Paragraph Sequencing Activity

This versatile paragraph sequencing activity can be used in multiple ways in your classroom. Read on to explore some ideas from our teacher team!

  1. Group Challenge – Break your class into five groups (teams). Provide each group with a set of sentences for one of the informative paragraphs. Time the students to see how long it takes them to correctly sequence their text. This adds an element of fun and friendly competition to the lesson.
  2. Station Rotation – Set each of the texts up at a different table and have the students rotate through each station to sequence the texts. This gives students the opportunity to practise their sequencing skills multiple times in a focused, small-group setting.
  3. Individual Practice – Allow students to work independently on sequencing one of the paragraphs. After students complete the exercise, have them compare their results with the complete version provided.
