Shinto shrine
A Shinto shrine is a place where Japanese people worship the Shinto religion. Many Shinto shrines are used for the safekeeping of sacred objects and house spirits known as “kami”. They have buildings, torii gates (pictured) and natural areas surrounding them. The common Japanese word for a Shinto shrine is jinja.
Buddhist temple
A Buddhist temple is a place where Buddhists worship. In Japan, many Buddhist temples have a pagoda, main hall, living quarters and scripture library. All Buddhist temples have a statue or image of Buddha. The common Japanese word for a Buddhist temple is tera.
