A Kangaroo Information Report for Kids

Are you looking for an information report writing project to assess your students’ understanding of the purpose, structure and language features of information reports? If so, look no further than Teach Starter’s kangaroo information report writing project!

This information report writing project has been designed by our experienced teacher team to support your students in writing a high-quality information report about one of Australia’s most iconic animals – the kangaroo. Students will be guided through the processes of researching facts about kangaroos and then using these facts to write an information report. Here’s how:

  1. Research – Students will gather important information on kangaroos using the fact file included or sources of their choice.
  2. Record – Students will complete the graphic organisers to sort the information they have collected into groups.
  3. Write – Students will use the information they have gathered to write a kangaroo information report on the pages provided. Alternatively, they may like to present their information using a medium of their choice.

You’ll find everything you need to implement this informative writing project in the comprehensive student workbook. The workbook contains the following:

  • Kangaroo fact file
  • Research graphic organiser
  • 2-page writing scaffold
  • Lined writing page
  • Unlined writing page
  • Assessment rubric

This kangaroo information report writing project downloads as:

  • PDF with colour fact file
  • PDF with black-and-white fact file
  • Google Slides file (contains both the colour and black-and-white fact files)

This kangaroo information report project combines literacy skills with research skills, making it a versatile resource for developing students’ writing abilities while engaging them in meaningful content.

How to Implement This Kangaroo Information Report Project

Are you looking for some ideas as to how you might implement this informative writing activity in your classroom? Here is one teacher’s suggested approach:

  1. Introduction to Kangaroos – Start the project by introducing students to the fascinating world of kangaroos. Show videos, share images and discuss what they already know. Present the kangaroo fact file as a starting point for their research.
  2. Guided Research – Provide students with opportunities to explore various child-friendly sources to gather more information about kangaroos. Encourage them to ask questions, take notes and discuss findings with peers.
  3. Graphic Organisers – Have students use the graphic organisers to collate their research. This ensures they organise their ideas logically and clearly. You can model how to use the graphic organiser to record research using another topic as a class activity.
  4. Writing Process – Guide students through the writing process of drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Students can use the writing scaffolds provided in the project booklet or they may wish to present their information using a medium of their choice.
  5. Sharing and Celebrating – Once the reports are complete, give students the opportunity to share their work. This could be done through a class presentation, a wall display or even by creating a digital presentation of their reports.
  6. Assessment of Writing – Use the sample rubric provided in the resource to assess your students’ kangaroo information reports according to a variety of criteria.
