Ready-Made Phonics Lessons on Short Vowels

Did someone say “ready-made phonics lesson plans”? We heard you!

Here at Teach Starter, we are dedicated to giving you back some of your planning time by providing resources that are ready to go, without requiring massive amounts of preparation on your part.

This interactive phonics activity encompasses everything you need to introduce the short ‘e’ vowel sound to your students and its accompanying word families. The download includes four daily runs of skill practice, followed by a comprehensive review activity. The sequence for use is as follows:

  • Day One: The short ‘e’ sound is introduced as the class moves through a series of timed slides with automated letter tiles to sound out and blend words in the -et word family. Students take turns reading words in the -et family in isolation and in context. This is followed by a word mapping exercise where students will say, tap, count and map the sounds in each word.
  • Day Two: The procedure repeats, focusing on the -en word family.
  • Day Three: The procedure repeats, focusing on the -ed word family.
  • Day Four: The procedure repeats, focusing on the -ell family.
  • Day Five: All word families introduced in the first four days of instruction are reviewed, followed by an extended 10-word word mapping exercise.

This resource includes four days of lessons to practise breaking, blending, decoding phrases and sentences, and word mapping practice. The full week’s worth of phonics lesson plans spans 184 animats slides with directions, four word family presentations, and one review presentation (containing blending and word-building practice).
