This instalment in the phonics lesson series is the Learn to Read Short U – Phonics for Kids instructional slide deck. It’s designed to cover everything you need to teach phonics, starting with the short ‘u’ sound and its CVC word families.
The package includes four days of skill practise, followed by a review and word mapping session. How do these lessons work? Here’s a quick rundown.
- On day one, your students will learn the short u sound, then move through a series of timed slides with automated letter tiles to sound out and blend words in the -ug word family. Students will then take turns reading words in the -ug family in isolation and in context. This practise is followed by an interactive word mapping exercise where students will say, tap, count, and map the sounds in each word.
- The remaining four lessons are identical in structure, whole focusing on different short u word families.
