Save the Day With Informal Measurement Tasks!
Are you looking for fun, open-ended, hands-on maths tasks to introduce your students to informal measurement? You’re in the right place! The Teach Starter team has been hard at work creating fun inquiry-based learning activities surrounding informal units of measurement.
This open-ended mathematics investigation has been designed to deepen students’ understanding of length.
In this investigation, students are tasked with saving the day for the school principal. The principal needs to find helpers to signal to be quiet during assemblies. The assemblies take place in a large space, so he needs people with long fingers so that everyone can actually see the signal! In this activity, students will work collaboratively to measure their hands to determine which student has the longest fingers using informal units.
This teaching resource includes:
- teacher notes detailing a range of important information about the investigation
- a detailed description of the investigation for students, including a step-by-step workbook for completing the task
