Listening Activities for Kids

Are your students in need of a refresher to help with their listening skills? We all know that being a good listener is important because it enhances communication skills, promotes empathy and understanding and teaches individuals to respect and value others. Teach Starter has created a set of 42 discussion cards (and accompanying poster) to help your students share information with others and encourage active listening.

Students are to take turns picking up one task card and reading and answering the question. The other student should practise their listening skills until the student is finished sharing. Once the first student finishes sharing, the second student can ask a follow-up question based on the response given.

This resource’s purpose is to allow students to work on their listening skills and learn what it means to be a good listener.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your social emotional lessons.

In addition to individual student work time, use this set of discussion cards to enhance learning through small groups, whole class lessons or remote learning assignments.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

For students who need additional support, allow them to have a peer or teacher read the discussion questions and/or separate the discussion questions that are less complex for the student to pick from.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

If there are students who are looking for an additional challenge, encourage them to create three questions to add to the deck of cards.
