Learning About the Long /A/ Vowel Sound
Teaching the long “a” vowel sound involves helping students understand the sound that the letter “a” makes when it says its name. The long “a” sound is pronounced like the letter itself, as in words such as “cake,” “late,” and “grade.”
While English spelling can be irregular, teaching other common spelling patterns can provide a solid foundation for your students to recognise and spell words with the long /a/ sound. Regular practise, reading, and exposure to words containing the long /a/ sound will help reinforce these spelling patterns for students.
The spelling patterns practised in this resource include ai, ay, and a_e.
