Manipulating Phonemes Activity – Adding Sounds to Create CVC Words
This engaging manipulating phonemes activity helps students build phonological awareness by adding beginning sounds to two-letter combinations to create meaningful CVC words. Here’s how it works:
- Using Spoons for Sound Manipulation: Students use spoons to add a beginning sound (phoneme) to two letters, forming new CVC words.
- Recording New Words: Students record the words they create on a recording sheet, helping reinforce their learning.
For students who need extra support, consider these modifications:
- Provide visual cues or picture cards that match the CVC words they’ll create.
- Use a smaller set of beginning sounds (spoons)
- Pair students with a buddy for extra guidance and collaboration.
Phoneme Manipulation Games
Do you students like anything that has the word game in the instruction? You can easily turn this phoneme manipulation activity into a phoneme manipulation game:
Materials:
- Spoons labeled with various beginning sounds
- A Spoonful of Words Sheet
- Recording sheets
- Timer
In pairs, place the spoons face down in the middle and provide each student with a sheet of two letter combinations. Students take turns in turning over a spoon and creating one word and then placing it back down (they can turn this spoon over again if they wish). The player with the most words recorded at the end of the set time is the winner.
This format turns phoneme manipulation into a fun, fast-paced game that reinforces CVC word formation and phonological awareness!
