Our Many Candles Counting Birthday Cake Activity Is Something to Celebrate! 

This many candles counting birthday cake activity is a colourful and engaging way for students to practise counting from 0 to 20. The resource includes a vibrant birthday cake picture and 20 cut-out candles, along with a number strip. As students add the correct number of candles to the cake, they visually connect numbers with quantities, reinforcing their counting skills. This hands-on activity can be used in a variety of classroom settings—whether as a guided group activity, in a maths station or as an individual practice task. It’s a fun and festive way to build number recognition and counting fluency!

Using Our Counting Birthday Candles Activity 

This counting birthday candles activity is easy to use! Simply follow the steps below to get your students counting to and representing numbers up to 20. 

  1. Print, cut and then laminate the birthday cake template, number strips and candles.
  2. Connect the number strips to make one long strip from 0 to 20.
  3. Cut along the dotted lines on the birthday cake to create two openings.
  4. From the back, feed the number strip through one opening and back through the other so that only one number can be seen at a time.
  5. To play, students will look at the number shown and add the same number of candles to the cake. 
  6. Move the strip to count forwards and backwards from 0 to 20.
