Put mass understanding into practise with this set of three word problem worksheets.
Real-World Examples of Mass in Practise
This set of worksheets has been created by an experienced teacher to give students the opportunity to show their knowledge of mass calculations with real-world word problems. Each worksheet includes 9 word problems that the students need to solve and includes answer sheets for peer or self-checking.
Here are some examples of the word problems students fill face in these worksheets:
- Jamie has a bag of apples weighing 1 kg 200 g and another bag of bananas weighing 800 g. What is the total weight of both bags?
- A total of 2,400 g of candy is divided into 6 equal bags. How much does each bag weigh?
- A pet store sells bags of dog food that each weigh 2 kg. If a customer buys 6 bags, what is the total weight of the dog food?
Word Problems Extending Mathematical Thinking
Mass word problems like these worksheets are a great activity to include in maths lessons as they include real-world scenarios that require your students to think outside basic maths calculations.
During maths word problems, students need to use complex problem-solving, often including multiple steps to think through the problems more deeply and apply their mass mathematical strategies. But utilising real-world examples, students can also see the practical applications of learning all about mass.
