Phoneme Blending Activities to Engage

These fun and interactive boards will help students practise combining sounds to form CVC and CCVC words while keeping them motivated and engaged.The bright colours and fun images are sure to peak your students interest in playing these games and won’t even know they’re actually learning! 

In this ‘Match and Cover’ game students choose a card and identify the word by blending the phonemes. Then, they need to find the matching image on the game board and cover it with their word card. Play continues until all of the words have been covered. 

This game can be adjusted in so many ways here are some suggestions:

• A simple individual activity where they race against the clock to beat their own time.
• In pars, students need to put a counter on the words they get correct.
• Use it like tic-tac-toe, students need to try and get a row to win.

How to Teach Blending CVC Words

Teaching budding readers to blend CVC words is an important skill for them to develop. This includes helping students to smoothly combine individual sounds to form words – which assists with them also comprehending what they are reading.

Here’s a suggested sequence of teaching events to help students with this skill.

1. Introduce the phonemes – students must be familiar with the phonemes of each letter of the alphabet.
2. Model blending – demonstrate blending CVC words – you could even use this quiz in a whole class environment and have some students also model the blending of these phonemes.
3. Segment and blend – first break down the words into the individual sounds and then segment to bring the sounds back together to say the whole word.
4. Practise, practise, practise – use manipulatives, letter tiles, flashcards and printable resources to allow students the opportunity to practise blending phonemes and letters to read words.
