Explore double digit numbers in standard and expanded form with this sorting activity for your maths groups.
Standard Form vs Expanded Form
Standard form and expanded form are two ways of representing numbers in mathematics. They serve different purposes and are useful in different contexts and for students to learn how to read and write numbers. This sorting activity focuses on double-digit numbers only.
In this activity, numbers are shown in standard form – the most common way to represent numbers, where a number is written as a simple sequence of digits, with each digit’s position indicating its place value. They are also shown in expanded form – a way to break down a number into its place values, showing the value of each digit separately.
Students must match the standard and expanded forms using this set of sorting cards.
How to Use This Maths Resource
- Students must pick up a standard form card and look for the matching expanded form card.
- Students will then place their match in a pile and record their match on their recording sheet.
Memory Game
- Students may mix up the cards or separate the standard and expanded form cards into two groups.
- Partners will take turns turning over two cards at a time, and if they match, the player will keep the pair and record it on their sheet.
- If the cards do not match, the player will turn the cards back over.
