Learning to Measure Mass Word Problems

This set of task cards has been created by an experienced teacher to help with the teaching and learning of measuring mass in the classroom. These word problems use everyday objects and get students either estimating or reading the mass of different objects. Here are a few examples of the problems written on these task cards:

  • What unit would you use to measure the mass of a full bucket?
  • Estimate the mass of the soccer ball.
  • What is the mass of the cat? (scales on image provided)

How to Use These Task Cards in the Classroom

The best thing about using task cards like this resource in the classroom is their versatility. Here are a few suggestions of how you can use these task cards in a slightly different way in the classroom:

  • Project each task card on the whiteboard as a warm up and get students to write the answers on their show me boards!
  • Place the task cards around the classroom and get students to walk around to each station and record their answers on their answer sheets – a simple change to make it more active.
  • Send them home as homework tasks.
