Explore how to measure mass with this fun and interactive set of digital task cards.
Discover the Fun of Measuring Mass with Interactive Task Cards!
This set of task cards has been created with the intention to provide a hands-on approach of understanding mass through estimation and real-world applications. Students will explore different objects and estimate their mass from three provided answers. For example, Do they think that the mass of a microphone is 1kg, 1g or 100g? Students will also explore objects on a range of different scales and determine the mass of each object using the scales to help them determine each object’s mass.
More Engaging Hands-On Mass Activities
If you are looking for more hands-on ways to teach your students about mass, we’ve asked our teaching team for some of their most favourite mass activities and we’ve included them here for you:
- Mass Mystery Box Activity – Place various objects inside boxes (shoe boxes work well!). Your students aren’t allowed to see what is inside. They must pick up the box and then guess the mass of each object inside. Students then use scales to measure the actual mass and compare it with their guesses.
- Mass Scavenger Hunt – Students need to search for items around the classroom that fit into a specific mass range. For example, less than 100 grams and more than 100 grams. After collecting a few objects students measure and record the mass of each object they found.
- Balancing Activity – Students will use balance scales. Challenge them to find pairs of objects that balance each other on the scales.
- Mass Estimation Station – set up scales, a recording sheet and various objects. Students need to estimate each object and then weigh them to check their estimate.
