Using Our Mixed Number and Improper Fraction Cards

There are many ways to use this mixed numbers and improper fractions activity! Here are a few ideas:

  • As Directed: Students mix the cards up and then match each mixed number to its improper fraction and model equivalent, writing their triad on the recording sheet.
  • Equivalence Hunt: Give each student a card, making sure that each card you give out has at least one equivalent. Students then stand up and look for other students who have a mixed number, model, or improper fraction representing the same amount.
  • Greater Than / Less Than: Break students into groups of three or four, and give each group a set of cards. Ask the groups to sort the cards into two piles: more than 2 and less than 2.
  • Ordering Fractions: Give a small group of students either the improper fraction, mixed number, or fraction modele 15-card set. Students work together to put the cards in order from least to greatest.
