‘Invest’ in This Money Place Value Chart!

Looking for a way to teach decimal place value that will ‘earn’ your students’ interest? This money place value chart activity set is just what you need! The resource includes three versions of a place value chart/mat, each featuring spots for the hundreds, tens, ones, tenths, hundredths and thousandths. Two versions are in colour, while one is in black and white, offering versatility for any classroom setting. Plus, a printable sheet with images of bills and coins allows students to physically place the ‘money’ into the chart to represent decimals, making learning both engaging and interactive.

This money place value chart activity set is great for teaching:

  • Decimal place value
  • Comparing decimals
  • Ordering decimals
  • Adding decimals
  • …and more!

How to Use This Place Value Money Chart

This place value money chart can be used in many ways! Here are instructions for one option:

  1. Download and print the resource, choosing which version of the mat you would like students to use. (Pro Tip: Print them on cardboard and laminate for longevity!)
  2. Give each student the money place value chart of your choice and the sheet of money manipulatives.
  3. Direct students to cut out the currency. (Alternatively, use real coins!)
  4. Demonstrate representing a decimal with the ‘money.’ For example, to represent 0.42, you would place four 10-cent coins in the tenths place and two cents in the hundredths place.
  5. Call out decimals for students to represent with their ‘money’ to give them practice with decimal place values.
  6. Give students multiple decimals and ask them to order, compare or add them using the resource!
