Grab a Dictionary and Hunt for the Morpheme Clues!

Armed with a dictionary, students hunt for the meanings of various prefixes, suffixes, root words and base words in this resource. Understanding that, in the world of word study, a morpheme is a meaningful unit, students delve into meaning-making as they analyse the morphemes provided.

The beauty of morphology is that, as they apply their knowledge of word-parts, students’ spelling skills are likely to improve.

This worksheet includes 10 questions and a ‘typical’ answer sheet to make grading fast and easy!

The Google Slides version of this worksheet can be used to simplify the resource. Perhaps you might modify the worksheet so that students have to locate the given word in the dictionary and then find another word close by that uses the same morphemes.  

Students needing a challenge could add additional questions (exploring other words and their roots etc.) for their peers to complete.

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete. 

Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing on thick card and slipping it into a write-and-wipe sleeve. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse. 

Additionally, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.
