Some students love a good word problem, while others find them to be a bit challenging! Why are word problems so important in maths class?

  • Real-world relevance – Word problems help to connect maths concepts to real-world situations, making them more meaningful and relevant to students.
  • Problem-solving skills – Word problems require students to read, understand and analyse a problem before applying maths concepts to solve it.
  • Communication skills – Word problems require students to explain their thinking and solutions in writing or verbally, which helps develop important communication skills.

This set of task cards has been designed by our expert teacher team to help students practise their decimal multiplication skills. Some problems require students to multiply a whole number by a decimal, whereas others challenge students to multiply 2 multi-digit decimals together. Each card features a different problem, presented in a clear and simple format, with real-world examples to make the concepts more relatable. The set includes 24 cards in total, with varying levels of difficulty to challenge students of different abilities.

These task cards can be used for classroom or independent practice, small group instruction or as a formative assessment. They are perfect for helping students develop problem-solving skills and building confidence in their maths abilities. The task cards also encourage students to think critically and apply their knowledge of multiplying with decimals to real-life situations.

This resource downloads as a printable PDF or editable Google Slides version. In addition to the question cards, it includes an answer key and a student recording sheet.

Multiple Uses for These Decimal Multiplication Word Problems

These decimal multiplication word problem task cards can be used in multiple ways in your classroom. You might like to use them in the following ways:

  2. Group Challenge – Divide the class into mixed-ability teams. Project the task cards onto your interactive whiteboard, one at a time. Have the students work together as a group to calculate the answer to each division question.
  3. Exit Tickets – Use these cards as a formative assessment or exit ticket after your lesson on decimal multiplication. Pick a random assortment of cards and project them on the board for the whole class to see. Students can record their answers on a sheet of paper, sticky note or their workbook.
