Social Emotional Learning Activities (Forgiving Others)

How do your students handle forgiving others for their mistakes? Is this skill something that they need to develop and explore further? Learning how to forgive others is important for children because it helps them feel better and move on from difficult situations. Children learn that sometimes people may hurt their feelings or do things that make them angry, sad or upset. Holding on to those feelings and create a sense of unhappiness and negativity.

Teach Starter has created a printable forgiveness journal to help students work through the steps of forgiving others. This set of printable pages includes:

  • a forgiveness journal cover page
  • a graphic organiser to use when following the steps (Beathe, Listen, Accept, Say) when forgiving a friend
  • reflection page
  • writing prompt.

By teaching children to forgive others, they can choose to focus on the positive instead of holding onto negative feelings. It will also help children build stronger relationships with the people around them.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

Students that are fast finishers can create a drawing to accompany their written reflections.

If students need additional support, allow them to complete the steps of the forgiveness sheet but work with a peer to help them write out their responses. Students could also be provided with sentence starters for the writing activity.
