Can Your Students Spell Homophones?
Every time your students are required to write a homophone, they must somehow pull the word with the correct spelling and meaning out of their memories. This is not always an easy task! The only way of automating these decisions is through continued immersion and practice with these very challenging words.
Enter Teach Starter’s digital game on choosing the correct homophone! These activities are the perfect accompaniment (or alternative!) to traditional worksheets, designed to familiarise your students with some of the most common homophones and their spellings. Each slide contains an image and two homophone options. Students are required to click on the correctly spelled option.
For example: An image of a sun has the written options of ‘sun’ and ‘son’ for the students to select from.
If students choose the incorrect answer, they are directed to a ‘Try Again’ slide, which allows them to return to the previous question for another attempt. If the student chooses the correct answer, they are directed to a ‘Great Job’ slide and can move on to the next question.
There are 15 question slides included in this digital resource. The homophones included are: sun/son, flower/flour, meet/meat, witch/which, plane/plain, bare/bear, write/right. blue/blew, pear/pair, mail/male, heel/heal, tale/tail, eye/I, poor/pour, one/won.

How to Extend Your Teaching of Homophones
Are you looking for a way to further challenge your students when it comes to using homophones in context? Here’s one suggestion from our teacher team on how you could use this resource to springboard into an additional lesson on this important topic:
Have your students write sentences that include both homophones on each slide in the resource. By doing this, students must demonstrate that they understand the meaning and the spelling of both homophones. For example:
My son does not like playing out in the sun for too long.
I hope that my sore heel does not take too long to heal.
I blew up the blue balloon.
Have your students share their sentences with the class. After all, the more engagement your students are having with these words, the better their understanding and retention of them will be!
