Practise identifying characters, settings, problems and solutions in fictional texts with this set of worksheets.
Identify Narrative Elements in Context
This narrative elements worksheet has been designed to support your students’ understanding of characters, settings, problems and solutions in narrative texts.
The students are given two pieces of text to read. Then they will identify the following story elements in a chart:
- Character
- Setting
- Problem
- Solution
Scaffolding and Extension Tips
To challenge students who already understand the concepts, ask them to write their own short stories using characters, settings, problems and solutions of their own creation. They can then share their stories with peers and discuss the story elements they described.
To scaffold this resource for struggling students, have them highlight the story elements in the text before filling in the table. This could be done in a targeted small group with adult support.
In addition to individual student work time, this worksheet can be used as a(n):
- Guided reading group activity
- Exit ticket activity
- Whole-class review activity (via smartboard)
- Summative assessment
Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students
Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between the PDF or Google Slides version of this resource.
Because this download includes the answer sheet, we recommend printing one copy of the entire file, then removing the student worksheets for photocopying.
Looking for ways to make your classroom more sustainable? Print a few copies on thick card, then slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a dry-erase marker, then erase and reuse. You could also project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.
