Fancy a Nature Walk?

Soil is one of the cornerstones that supports life on Planet Earth. It supports and nurtures plants, provides habitats for creatures great and small, and allows humans to access resources such as crops for food, fibres for clothes, and materials for building.

What better way to appreciate the diversity and value of soil than by experiencing it firsthand? So grab your sun-safe hats and gardening gloves, it’s time to take your class on a nature walk!

This nature walk brochure template has been designed by our expert teacher team to support you in teaching your students about the importance of soil to plants, animals and humans. Using the template, students will be able to draw their location, record their findings and reflect on how soil contributes to the ecosystem. Students will:

  • Illustrate their location
  • Record activity in the location
  • Note the presence of plants, animals and human interactions
  • Note any questions or wonderings about the ecosystem
  • Consider the importance of healthy soil to the ecosystem

This nature walk brochure template downloads as a black-and-white PDF or an editable Google Slides file.

Soil Nature Walk = Maximum Benefits for Students

Why read about soil in a textbook when you can get your students to observe soil through a real-world learning activity? There are multiple benefits to getting your students out in the fresh air to observe soil in action. Here are our top three:

  1. Scientific Inquiry Skills – Allowing your students to interact with nature encourages them to ask questions, look for patterns and draw conclusions based on the evidence they have collected.
  2. Improved Retention of Content – Spending time in a natural setting provides a refreshing break from the traditional classroom setting, which leads to enhanced concentration in our students.
  3. Connection to the Environment – Personal interaction with the environment fosters a sense of connection and responsibility toward our planet, making it more likely that our students will be more environmentally conscious in the future.
