Have students gather the treasure and make matches of numerals, quantities and number names with this match-up activity.
Connect Number Names, Numerals and Quantities
Making connections between all the ways we represent numbers is a key skill students learn in the early years. With this resource, students will have fun finding the different gems and placing those that are equivalent onto treasure chests to make matches.
The numbers represented in this resource are 1–20. The representations include:
- numeral
- name
- collection of objects
- ten or twenty frames.
Through this activity, students will show they can connect number names, numerals and quantities, initially up to 10 and then beyond.
Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding
A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your maths lessons.
In addition to individual student work time, use this number-matching game to enhance learning through guided maths groups or whole class lessons.
If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:
🆘 Support Struggling Students
Help students who need help understanding the concepts by focusing on numbers 1–10 first. Have them use concrete materials such as counters and place them on the red star gem cards for 1:1 correspondence.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
Have students who need an extra challenge create their own representations of each number on a scrap piece of paper.
