Use place value skills to mentally add and subtract 10 or 100 to a given number with this set of worksheets.
10 More, 10 Less Worksheets (And 100 More, 100 Less!)
Are your students able to mentally determine a number that is 10 or 100 more or less than a given number? Being able to use place value to mentally add and subtract is an important skill that early years students work on throughout the year.
Teach Starter has created a set of 3 worksheets that you can use with your students when mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100 to a number. The numbers used in these worksheets range from 100 – 1200.
Students can complete the worksheets independently, in pairs or with a small group. These would make a great for checking understanding of the concept. The following pages are included with this download:
- double-sided worksheet practicing 10 more and 10 less
- double-sided worksheet practicing 100 more and 100 less
- double-sided worksheet practicing a combination of 10 or 100 more or less.
An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!
Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding
In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:
- Guided maths groups
- Lesson warm-up
- Lesson wrap-up
- Fast finishers
- Homework assignment
- Whole-class review (via smartboard)
As an extension, challenge students to create their own ‘thousands chart’ instead of a hundreds chart. Each box would be skip counting by 10 instead of 1, and therefore one chart would have 1000. Then, ask students to create a set of clues for coloring their thousands chart and trade with a classmate.
To provide additional support, encourage students to use physical manipulatives such as MAB blocks. Demonstrate how a hundreds chart can be used to help as well. Once students are successful and confident using the manipulatives, you can switch to having them attempt mental calculations.
Easily Download & Print
Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between the PDF or editable Google Slides version of this resource.
Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.
To save paper, we suggest printing this 2-page worksheet double-sided.
Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing on thick card and slipping it into a dry-erase sleeve. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse them.
