Colourful Number Recognition Practice

Colour-by-number activities have been well-loved by young students for years, but this set is unique. Students will encounter six different number forms, helping them form a deep understanding of number recognition. Number forms included are:

  • Ten frames
  • Tallies
  • Fingers
  • Quantities
  • Word forms
  • Numeral forms

Students use the key to see what color and numeral are matched, and then color in the sections with the corresponding representation on the picture. These worksheets are an engaging way to enhance your students’ cognitive flexibility and their general understanding of numbers!

Number Recognition Teaching Tips

The ability to recognise numbers in many forms is a foundational maths skill. Here are some tips on ways to help your students connect numbers, quantities, words, and other representations:

  1. Scoot Activity: Hang large pieces of paper around the room, each labelled with a number 0 – 10. Students “scoot” around the room with a pencil and add a representation of that number to the paper they don’t see yet. For example, for the number 2, they could add two tallies, two stars, trace their hand holding up two fingers, or write the word “two.”
  2. Visual Aids: Post anchor charts, labels, or posters with various representations of numbers around the room so students have continuous exposure to many number forms.
  3. Read Aloud: There are many fantastic number books available that portray numeral form, word form, and quantities of a number. Read them aloud often to your students!

Directions:

  1. Download and print the colour-by-number worksheet of your choice.
  2. Give students the worksheet and crayons.
  3. Students match the number in the key to a section with the corresponding representation on their worksheet, and then colour that section the colour indicated in the key.
