Building Number Recognition With Snap Cubes

Snap cubes are a versatile and well-loved maths manipulative. Here are some ideas of how you can use this hands-on resource with your young mathematicians!

  • Build and Match: Show students a number and then ask them to build you a tower with that many snap cubes.
  • Comparing Numbers: Ask students to compare two different amounts of cubes by building or subitising.
  • Making Patterns: Students can make patterns with different colours and numbers of cubes.
  • Problem Solving: Ask students to represent story problems with the snap cubes, and then manipulate them to help them find the answer.

Instructions:

  1. Print and laminate the activity mats of your choice.
  2. Give students a dry erase marker and some snap cubes.
  3. Students use the dry erase marker to trace the numeral form and the word form of the number.
  4. Students use snap cubes to represent the number in the ten frame.
  5. Students fill in the numeral shape on the left with snap cubes.
