Engaging Number Recognition Activities for Preschool and Foundation Students

Looking for number recognition activities for preschool or foundation students? Students will love dotting their way through these mazes while practising identifying numbers up to 20. These worksheets include three tasks:

  • Students trace the target number at the top.
  • Students identify and “dot” the circles with the target number to complete the maze.
  • Students colour the objects in the target number at the bottom.

Students can use bingo dabbers, crayons, coloured pencils, or other tools to complete these mazes. This resource includes dot maze worksheets and answer keys for the numbers 1 through 20.

What Age Is Appropriate For Number Recognition?

We all know that children develop at their own pace, however, here are some general guidelines:

  • 2-3 Years: Some children may start to recognise and name a few numbers.
  • 3-4 Years: Many children can recognise and name numbers up to 10.
  • 4-5 Years: Children develop a more consistent ability to recognise and name numbers up to 20.
  • 5-6 Years: With the help of their teachers, by the end of foundation students should be able to recognise and name numbers up to 20 with confidence.

So don’t be afraid to introduce numbers to students at a young age — chances are, they may already have had some natural exposure to numbers!
