My Life in Numbers!

Numbers infiltrate all aspects of our lives. Number of years, number of pets, number of family members, number of letters in your name… no matter what the topic, there’s often a number associated with it!

This resource has been designed to help your students explore the numbers that have relevance to their own lives. Not only does this enable them to experiment with numbers, but it also serves as a fun way of having students introduce themselves at the start of a new school year. Some of the prompts included on the worksheet are:

  • I am ____ years old.
  • I have ____ pets.
  • I like the number ____.
  • I was born on ____.
  • There are ____ people in my family.
  • I have lost ____ teeth so far.

This worksheet is an excellent way for students to introduce themselves while practising essential numeracy skills.

Thinking of using this worksheet as a start-of-year icebreaker activity? Here’s how you might go about it!

  1. Class Discussion – Start a class discussion about the different prompts on the worksheet. Encourage students to share interesting facts about themselves related to the numbers, fostering a sense of community and curiosity.
  2. Worksheet Completion – Distribute the “My Life in Numbers” worksheets to each student. Walk them through the prompts, providing examples and assisting with any questions they may have. Allow students time to fill in their responses, ensuring they understand how to record numbers accurately.

This can be done in a casual, show-and-tell format where students share a few of their favourite prompts. Use this time to celebrate each student’s individuality and make everyone feel valued.
