Represent Numbers 1 – 20 in Multiple Ways

Why ask your students to match numbers to one representation when you can ask them to match numbers to five?  Students will quickly deepen their number recognition skills working with numbers in so many forms. Number representations in this resource include:

  • Word form
  • Numeral form
  • Tallies
  • Quantities
  • Ten Frames
  • Base Ten Blocks

One Resource With Many Uses

With so many number representations, you are sure to find multiple ways to use this resource. But here are a few ideas to get you started:

  1. Number Representation Relay – In groups, students race to find all representations of a specific number and bring them to a central spot.
  2. Matching Stations – Set up stations around the room, each with a different type of representation. Students rotate through the stations, matching the number to the appropriate representation at each station.
  3. Number Sorting Mats – Students sort the representation cards onto the correct mats based on the number.
  4. “I Spy” Number Hunt – Hide representation cards around the room. Students draw a number card and go on an “I Spy” hunt to find all the representations of that number.
  5. Number Hopscotch – Create a hopscotch grid with numbers. Students hop to a number, then find and place the correct representation card on the corresponding square.

Your students will enjoy coming up with new ideas as well!
