Break Down Onset and Rime Understandings
This set of mini books has been created to help students practise their knowledge in the simplest parts of onset and rime. Onsets (the beginning sound) and rimes (the ending sound). For each mini book there are three different options to choose from, either the onset provided and they need to write the rime, the rime provided and they need to provide the onset, or both onset and rime blank and students need to encode both! This allows for a versatile resource that suits the skill level of multiple students.
Each mini book has been carefully designed by an early years teacher to be engaging and easy to follow, with PLENTY of repetition to help reinforce key phonemic awareness.

Making Your Onset and Rime Word Booklets
To make these handy onset and rime word books for kids, do the following.
- Print the mini book template on standard copy paper, double-sided.
- Have students cut apart the pages and stack them in any order, ending with the cover on top.
- Staple the books along the left side.
- Students will write the onset and rime words shown on each mini-book page and colour the pictures.
Once complete, your students will have fun reading and sharing their books inside and outside the classroom.
