Decoding Onset and Rime Words

This engaging and interactive mini flip book has been designed and created by a teacher to assist in the early years classroom with students who are learning about onset and rime words. The following onset and rime word families are included in this set of mini books:

• -an word family
• -ad word family
• -am word family
• -at word family
• -en word family
• -et word family
• -eg word family
• -ed word family
• -id word family
• -it word family
• -in word family
• -ip word family
• -ob word family
• -op word family
• -ot word family
• -og word family
• -ug word family
• -ut word family
• -un word family
• -ub word family

To create the mini book – students need to cut out both rectangles and along the dotted lines at the bottom rectangle. Using the top rectangle as the base of the book, they will place the four pages cut out from the bottom of the rectangle on top of each other and glue them to the base to create the flipbook.

The best part about the variety of mini flip books is that you can pick and choose which word family you want your students to focus on based on the skill set of the children in your class.

Onset and Rime Activities to do Using Mini Flipbooks

Once your students have created their mini books – there are many activities you can do to consolidate their knowledge. Here are just a few suggestions:

1. Pick a word and say or write it in a sentence.
2. Using letter tiles get the students to build each of the words in their flipbooks.
3. Get students to write the words on their mini whiteboards and then put a dot under each letter/sound.
4. Practice blending – say the onset and rime separately and then have students blend them together to say the word. This can be done orally or with magnetic letters – alternatively swap this around and get students to practise decoding their onset and rime words.
5. Go on a word hunt – get students to go searching for the words in story books or magazines.
